Deeds and papers relating to Skyrme family of Llawhaden and Protheroe family of Stonehall, St Lawrence

Skyrme and Protheroe family papers, comprising: title deeds, leases and related papers, of Pembrokeshire, 1467-1921; Carmarthenshire, 1742-1820; London, 1782; wills and settlements, 1709-1805; estate papers, including manorial papers, 1690-1836; business and personal papers, 1698-1838; and miscellaneous papers, [c. 1580]-[19th century].

The Skyrme family came from Shropshire, and resided at Llawhaden, Pembrokeshire, since the early 17th century. William Skyrme, of Ludlow, Shropshire, was an attorney in a case during the Pembrokeshire Great Session of 1640. John Skyrme, of Llawhaden, was High Sheriff in 1716. His wife was Frances Skyrme, and their daughter was Lucy Cordelia Skyrme. She married John Protheroe, of Egremont, Carmarthenshire, the son and heir of Lewis Protheroe. John Protheroe was the High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire in 1784. In 1793, he inherited Stonehall (or Stone Hall), in St Lawrence, Pembrokeshire, and moved there. The Skyrmes were encountering financial difficulties, and in 1803 parts of the estate were sold by order of the Chancery to clear the Skyrme debts. The Rev. William Ford Protheroe, son of John and Lucy Cordelia Protheroe, died, heavily in debt, in 1823.
