Dr John Alun Thomas papers

The collection includes lecture notes and drafts of articles on a wide range of European history topics. Subjects covered include a general introduction and summary of European History, 1300-1815, the causes of the First World War, the Reformation, the French Revolution and various items on developments in politics, diplomacy and government. The collection also contains miscellaneous items including a University class register for 1957-1958.

John Alun Thomas was Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Wales, Bangor, formerly University College of North Wales, 1926-1963.

John Alun Thomas was educated at Aberystwyth, where he graduated with distinction in History and Economics. In 1923 he was elected to a university fellowship, which he used for research into the composition and structure of the nineteenth century House of Commons, under the direction of Harold Laski at the London School of Economics. His dissertation on this subject, for which he received a Ph.D., was later developed into what became a standard work, The House of Commons, 1832-1901, published in 1939. This was expanded and published in 1958 as The House of Commons, 1906-1911, an analysis of its economic and social character. In 1926 he took up a position in the History and Extra Mural Departments at University of Wales, Bangor, and lectured on a wide range of European history topics. His particular research interests included international government and politics and the rise of small parties.

Outside the classroom, he gave his time generously to student societies and outside organisations including adult education classes to which he had a lifelong commitment that began in his Aberystwyth days and he was known for being supportive of students, particularly anyone in difficulties. In Anglesey, where he went to live after the war, he served on the magistrate's bench and in a number of other public capacities. He died in August 1963 shortly before he was due to retire, after a period of illness. He was warmly regarded by colleagues and students.
