Records of Davies Brothers, 1800-1896, and of the Cardigan branch of Swansea Old Brewery & Davies' (Cardigan) Bonded Stores Ltd., 1896-1921, including ledgers, 1872-1908, day books, 1872-1918, press letter books, 1878-1919, cash books, 1879-1912, bills, 1893-1913, order books, 1898-1921, receipts, 1904-1910, records relating to orders, 1904-1920, and letters from the company's Swansea and Pembroke branches, 1905-1920, together with a group of additional papers, [19 cent., last ¼]-[1930s], 1980. Papers of John Davies, solicitor, 1804-1883, including electoral registers for the Cardigan boroughs, 1834-1839, and papers relating to the business affairs of Daniel Davies of The Bonded Stores, Cardigan, 1878-1882.

Administrative / Biographical History

The business of Davies Brothers was established around 1800 and sold bonded spirits, wines and beers to licensed premises in the Cardigan area. In 1896 the business was amalgamated with The Swansea Old Brewery and with Messrs R. George & Son of Pembroke to form The Swansea Old Brewery & Davies' (Cardigan) Bonded Stores Ltd., with branches in Swansea, Pembroke and Cardigan. Davies' Brothers were clients of John Davies of Cardigan, solicitor, who appears to have practiced 1878-1883.
