Scope and Content

Journal of a honeymoon tour through Scotland made in June 1856.

A pencil note on p.1 describes this as 'A Journal of my Father Corbet S Catly Before his marriage'. In the hand of the author of the volume at the head of the same page is given '4 June 1856, Wednesday, 42 Albany St Edinburgh'. [42 Albany St was at this time a lodging house]. However the text itself describes this as 'our marriage trip - the bride has left a mother's home'.

The journey was initially undertaken by rail, subsequently by public conveyance, visiting: Bridge of Allan [Perthshire], Perth, Dunkeld [Perthshire], Blair Atholl [Perthshire], Kenmore [Perthshire], Callander [Perthshire], Loch Katrine [Perthshire], Rowardennan [Stirlingshire], Luss [Dunbartonshire], Inverary, Oban [Argyllshire]. The journal ends in mid sentence at the approach locks to the Crinan Canal. For the most part a tourist journal, it includes an eye witness account of a wedding at Kenmore [p.32 et seq].

Line drawings by the author p.18 [Rumbling Bridge], p.23 a bridge in Glen Tilt [Old Bridge of Glen Tilt ?], p.58 and p.60 Ben Lomond from Rowardennan.

Pasted within the volume, line engravings of Philps Royal Hotel, Bridge of Allan [p.5], Stirling and Stirling Castle [p.7], Dunkeld Bridge [p.11], Dunkeld Cathedral [p.13], The Hermitage [p.14], Rumbling Bridge [p.15], Dunkeld [p.16], Falls of Bruar [p.26], Taymouth Castle [pp.31, 37], Loch Lubnaig and Callander [p.41], Loch Venachar [p.43], the Trossachs Hotel [p.45], 'Trosachs' [p.47], McIntyre's New Trossachs and Bridge of Turk Hotel [p.50], Loch Katrine [p.55], Loch Lomond [p.61], Loch Fyne [p.71], Inverary Castle [p.73], Loch Awe [p.77], Loch Etive and Dunstaffnage Castle [p.78], Oban [p.79], Sound of Kerrera [p.81], Dumbarton Castle and Adrissaig Point [p.82].

Botanical specimens: pasted to pp.24, 53, 67 bracken [Pteridium aquilinum?], to p.36 Viola canina from Taymouth, to p.52 Pinguicula vulgaris - butterwort, to p. 63 Hycinthus nonscriptus, to p.73 Veronica from Inverary Castle.

Pasted inside front cover: Railway Map of Scotland.
