NPG - Press releases

Press releases are issued in relation to all significant Gallery business. The majority concern exhibitions and displays, including associated events such as private views, lectures and conferences. They may also concern: significant acquisitions and commissions; sponsorship; fundraising; Education related initiatives; significant building works; visitor figures; and celebrations.

This series only represents a complete record since 2004. Before this date many press releases are missing.

Following the appointment of Roy Strong as Director in 1967, the Gallery underwent a period of huge expansion: activity in all traditional areas of Gallery work increased and many new initiatives were begun. In the ten years that followed, the Gallery transformed from a relatively inward looking institution to one with a wide appeal to external audiences. In relation to this change, the Gallery began to place more emphasis on pro-actively attracting publicity. A Research Assistant was appointed in 1968 specifically to deal with this aspect of work. One of the core duties attached to this post was the responsibility to inform the press and public about the Gallery's activities. In pursuit of this aim, the post-holder began to compile and release official statements to the press. The first release was issued in 1968 and the Gallery has continued to communicate with press and the public in this manner ever since.
