Sir Arthur Lyon Bowley 1869 - 1957

Sir Arthur Lyon Bowley was educated at Christ's Hospital and Trinity College Cambridge. He started his career as an assistant master at St Johns school Leatherhead, 1893 - 1899, becoming a lecturer at the London School of Economics from 1895 and a mathematical lecturer at University College, Reading, 1900 - 1907. He stayed on at Reading to become Professor of Mathematics and Economics, 1907 - 1913, and lecturer in Economics, 1913 - 1919. He then moved to the University of London to become Professor of Statistics, 1919 - 1936, becoming Emeritus Professor in 1936. In 1940 he became acting director of the University of Oxford Institute of Statistics and stayed until 1944.

Sir Arthur Bowley was also involved in the Royal Statistical Society, and was vice-president 1907 - 1909, 1912 - 1914 and president 1938 - 1940. He was equally involved in the Royal Economic Society, becoming vice-president.
