Records of the Northern Cross-Country Association

Records of the Northern Cross-Country Association comprising a small number of minutes and meeting papers; programmes relating to the annual championships; large sequence of official results; and miscellaneous newspaper cuttings and ephemera. The majority of papers date from the mid-20th century although the collection does include some earlier newspaper cuttings and programmes dating back to 1906.

The collection also includes a small number of papers, primarily typescript results, relating to the Northern Women's Cross-Country League.

The Northern Cross-Country Association (NCCA) was founded in 1882. It was originally confined to the counties of Northumberland, Cumberland, Westmorland, Durham, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire. The management was vested in a committee comprising one representative of each associated club for ordinary meetings, and two representatives for general meetings. Each associated club paid an annual subscription and each was held equally liable for any losses incurred in staging the annual championships. The Association's first President, or Chairman, was H. M. Oxley of Cheshire Tally-Ho Harriers. A number of early championships were held at Manchester Racecourse, Salford.

A number of reports concerning the NCCA, and its annual championships, were published in the journal Athletic News.
