Scope and Content

Comprises: Autograph manuscript and typescript drafts for Turner's poem 'Train of thought', two of which are entitled 'Dark circles', with many manuscript revisions to the text, together with his signed typescript of the final version; Correspondence between Turner and Mr B.S. Page, Leeds University Librarian, dated 16 and 24 February 1964, concerning Turner's donation of the manuscripts to the Brotherton Collection as representing part of his work as a Gregory Fellow in Poetry at the University of Leeds. The accessions slip for Turner's poem drafts is also retained in the file.

Some of the texts are composed on coloured paper, namely, 2 green ruled sheets for the main draft of 'Train of thought' and 1 smaller reddish sheet for one version of 'Dark circles'. On the former there are numerous revisions to the text written in red ballpoint pen; on two other sheets these are written in blue ballpoint pen.

Administrative / Biographical History

William Price Turner, the poet, editor, and critic, was born in York on 14 August 1927. He was a Gregory Fellow in Poetry at Leeds University 1960-1962 and won the Scottish Arts Council Publication Award in 1970.
