Gyffin Parish Account Book

An account book of the overseers of the parish of Gyffin, Caernarfonshire from 1825-1873 which includes tables of disbursements and payments, details of levying of assessments, collections of arrears and incidences of litigation. Also, vestry resolutions for 1839 and further accounts which touch upon cases of migration and settlement.

Gyffin parish vestry in Caernarfonshire was an important instrument of local government in the nineteenth century, particularly the specially chosen group of parishioners known as the select vestry. This group, which managed parish affairs, had responsibility for ecclesiastical matters and for certain areas of civil government which included dealing with the poor of the parish, law and order issues, public health, highways and education. Vestry powers included collection and allocation of rates and appointment of parish officials such as overseers of the poor, constables, surveyors of highways and churchwardens.

The overseers of the poor were appointed annually and expected to perform various administrative duties mainly connected with the relief of the poor.
