Amateur Bicycle Club

Scope and Content

Papers relating to the Amateur Bicycle Club, founded in 1871. Henry N. Custance was Hon. Secretary from the beginning until c.1903. By this time the Club was failing, and Algie Praed took over as Secretary as well as Captain. Correspondence in 1912 referred to the lack of interest in the Club and in 1929 there was further correspondence about winding it up and transferring its assets to the Metropolitan Hospital Sunday Fund as a memorial to Mr Custance. This was probably done.

Administrative / Biographical History

Photocopies of items, sent to a godchild of Algie Praed, who took them to Sotheby's, where they were bought by a Canadian, Lorne Shield, who has supplied the copies now held by the National Cycle Archive.
