Administrative / Biographical History

The Tithe Commutation Act 1836 was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It replaced the ancient system of payment of tithes in kind with monetary payments or rent charges based upon the average corn prices in the previous seven years. Tithes were originally paid as one-tenth of the produce of the land (crops, eggs, cattle, timber, fish) to the rector, as alms and as payment for his services and were often stored in a tithe barn attached to the parish. The value of the tithe was agreed by the tithe payers in the parish, and the rent charge was divided proportionately among all the proprietors. A plan was produced by a surveyor, with an accompanying schedule or apportionment recording the names of the owner and occupier of each parcel of land, with a description of the property, its acreage and the value of the rent charge. Three copies of the plan and apportionment were made: one was deposited with the Tithe Commissioners, another with the Diocesan Registrar, and the third with the incumbent of the parish.
