Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Oystermouth Local Board of Health was established in 1874 to administer sanitation in the parish of Oystermouth. The majority of the population was at that time concentrated in the south of the parish, in Newton, Norton and Mumbles, and the ratepayers in the northern part resented the extra expense. In 1894, following the Local Government Act of that year, Oystermouth Local Board became Oystermouth Urban District Council, but this only covered the southern half of the parish of Oystermouth; the remainder became part of Gower Rural District Council, and was renamed Brynau. In 1918 the boundaries of Swansea County Borough were greatly extended. Oystermouth Urban District Council ceased to be and became part of the County Borough.
