Scope and Content

This collection comprises of the records of Laxey Village
Commissioners, including:
- audited accounts;
- property valuation books;
- a water rate book;
- plans of proposed waterworks;
- minute books and files of minutes;
- a mortgage bond book;
- cash books;
- a ledger;
- a petition to abolish parking at Victoria Terrace.

Administrative / Biographical History

Laxey was constituted a village district in 1895 under the Local Government Amendment Act 1894. Village districts are a body of commissioners elected by the local government electors of the district, their functions include:
- Public information and advice;
- Tourism;
- Refuse collection;
- Street-lighting;
- Environmental health;
- Public conveniences;
- Parks, playgrounds and other leisure facilities;
- Control of dogs;
- Car-parking;
- Street cleaning;
- Sewerage;
- Abandoned vehicles.

In May 2016, Laxey Village Commissioners was merged with Lonan Parish Commissioners and
Maughold Parish Commissioners to form Garff Commissioners.

Selected for permanent preservation and accessioned by Angela Skitt, Public Record Officer, under section 3(4) of the Public Records Act 1999.

Custodial History

These records were selected for preservation by Roger Sims (Manx National Heritage Librarian Archivist) during a site visit on 12 March 1997. Collected by Wendy Thirkettle and received as a long-term loan (then called a 'permanent loan') on 1 May 1997 from Mr T A Kinrade, Clerk to the Commissioners, Office of Laxey Village Commissioners, 35 New Road, Laxey IM4 7BG (Tel 861241). Allotted deposit ref MS 09797. Listed and sub-numbered by Roger Sims (Librarian Archivist) in August 1997. Permission was given by Manx National Heritage Trustees on 5 September 2019 for several deposit of public records, including deposit MS 09797, to be transferred from Manx National Heritage to the Public Record Office in order to rationalise holdings between the two Manx archival repositories. The records were transferred to the Isle of Man Public Record Office on 10 May 2022.
