WICKSTEED PHILIP HENRY 1844 - 1927 ANGLICAN CLERGYMAN

One volume containing lecture papers, notes, correspondence and copies of some of Wicksteed's publications, includes:

• Inventory in ink in the hand of Wicksteeds's daughter Rebecca Wicksteed, of her father's papers sent by her to this Library in 1946. Except for the nine entries marked with a blue x, which have not been included in this collection, the inventory tallies with Items 2-23 below. See also in the correspondence files of the library, the correspondence with Rebecca Wicksteed of January 1946, especially her letter of 20 February 1946, quoted in Item 16.

Philip Henry Wicksteed 1844 - 1927

Philip Wicksteed was educated at Ruthin Grammar School, University College School, University College and Manchester New College. In 1868 he married Emily Rebecca the eldest daughter of the Rev Henry Solly (1813 - 1903), social reformer and author of The Condition of the English Working Class: the papers of the Reverend Henry Solly (1990).

He became a Unitarian minister in 1867 and moved to Taunton. In 1870 he moved to Dukinfield, near Manchester, staying for four years before moving to the Little Portland Street Chapel in London. He remained here from 1874 - 1897.

In addition to his ministry Philip Wicksteed was a University Extension Lecturer. He held this position from 1887 - 1918 and lectured on Dante, political economy, Wordsworth and Greek tragedy.
