Scope and Content

The Huckvale family were a prominent family in Over Norton (a hamlet inside the parish of Chipping Norton). These records concerning them were given to Oxfordshire Archives in 1995 as

Accession No. 3974. Some of them had been held in the Bodleian Library for a few years before that.

The records mostly consist of title deeds relating to Huckvale property. They are somewhat fragmentary, and it would seem that there must once have been many more documents on the family's lands. The collection also includes, however, a several farm accounts and some children's exercise books.

The Huckvales were prominent in local life, and held many important parish posts, especially in the 18th century. As a result, when these papers arrived at Oxfordshire Archives, they were found to include an extensive collection of documents relating to the Overseers of the Poor and the Constables of Over Norton. These papers have been catalogued with the parish records of

Chipping Norton (PAR64); a detailed list of which records were transferred may be found in an appendix to this catalogue.

Catalogued by Robin Darwall-Smith in September 1996.
