NPG - NPG Posters

Posters continue to be issued in relation to all significant Gallery business. The vast majority concern exhibitions and displays. They are also issued in relation to the Collections (generally advertising significant new acquisitions and commissions); education-related initiatives; building works and refurbishments; as well as Regional Partnerships (Montacute House, Bodelwyddan, Beningborough).

Following the appointment of David Piper as Director in 1964, the Gallery underwent a period of huge expansion: activity in all traditional areas of Gallery work increased and many new initiatives were begun. This included, in particular, the emergence of an active exhibitions programme featuring fully designed exhibitions which incorporated works from external collections. In the ten years that followed, the Gallery transformed from a relatively inward looking institution to one with a wide appeal to external audiences. In relation to this change, more emphasis was placed on pro-actively attracting the public. Although the Gallery had issued posters in the past, following the establishment of a design department, these were now produced and issued on a regular basis.

Arranged by subject matter into the following sub-series: Exhibitions; The Collections; Building; Regional Partnerships; Education. Within these groups, posters are listed in rough chronological order.
