Scope and Content

Petition to his Majesty's Treasury concerning the fire at York Minster on 2 Feb 1829, requesting leave to purchase 300 tons of oak from the stores in his Majesty's Dockyards for the purpose of repairing the roof. Signed by William Cockburn [Dean], the Duke of Devonshire, and Lords Carlisle, Wentworth Fitzwilliam and Harewood.

The manuscript is bound with a transcription. The volume contains the bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton.

Administrative / Biographical History

Sir William Cockburn, 11th Baronet (2 June 1773 - 30 April 1858) was Dean of York from 1823 until his death in 1858. Whilst Dean he oversaw the repair of York Minster following an arson attack in 1829, and another accidental fire in 1840. He was briefly deposed from the Deanery following an accusation of simony in 1841 before being reinstated by the court of the Queen's Bench.
