Contains the collections relating to and produced by staff and colleagues of Standard Life based in Counties outside the United Kingdom. Also includes Colonial Life Collection and a General Overseas collection with material from various countries which cannot be separated.
The Colonial Life Assurance Company was formed in 1846 to provide life assurance cover and finance to UK nationals who chose to live and work overseas. The company shared staff and offices with The Standard Life Assurance Company, and the manager of Standard Life, William Thomas Thomson, became the actuary of Colonial Life. The Colonial Life Assurance Company had offices in Europe, Canada, South America, the West Indies, India and China. It was dissolved in 1866 when it merged with The Standard Life Assurance Company.
