Monmouth District Council came into existence on 1 April 1974 as one of the five districts of the new county of Gwent. It replaced the boroughs of Abergavenny and Monmouth, Chepstow and Usk urban districts, Abergavenny, Chepstow and Monmouth rural districts and part of Pontypool rural district. The Council served a population of about 81,000 people. The Council comprised 40 elected councillors, including the Mayor. The principal officers employed by the Council were the Chief Executive, Director of Administration & Legal Services, Director of Finance, Director of Housing & Environmental Services and the Director of Technical Services. Monmouth District Council subsequently changed its name to Monmouth Borough Council and was abolished in 1996.
