Scope and Content

The Shakespeare Reprint of the Folio of 1623. and Some New Readings. A 239 page folio manuscript volume, containing the text apparently used for typesetting 41 of the series of 51 articles, Further Readings in Shakespeare which appeared in the Aberdeen Herald, between May 1862 and January 1873, and which form the basis of the author's Studies on the Text of Shakespeare; with numerous emendations and appendices (London: Hamilton, Adams&Co., 1878), published after many years of collaboration with the editors of the Cambridge Shakespeare: The Works of William Shakespeare, ed. by William George Clark and William Aldis Wright, 9 vols. (Cambridge: Macmillan, 1863-1866).

The volume is inscribed (The original manuscripts, as far as extant, of the series of Shakespearian Papers which appeared in the Aberdeen Herald between May 1862 and January 1873 under the signature J.B., presented to Alexander Skene, Esq., Regent Quay, and frankly accepted by him as a Memorial of a few short years' friendly intercourse with the author and well-wisher, John Bulloch Aeiatis suae 70 - 1875).

Administrative / Biographical History

John Bulloch (1805-82) was the father of John Bulloch, editor of Scottish Notes and Queries and author of George Jamesone, the Scottish Vandyck (Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1885) and numerous other literary and historical pieces; and grandfather of John Malcolm Bulloch, alumnus of the University, journalist, critic, author, literary-, antiquarian- and genealogical researcher, and one of the major benefactors of the University in terms of research material.
