Related Material

The 8 books that were part of this collection have been catalogued onto the Library catalogue, and shelved in the Rare Book Room due to their enclosures:
BGVK2: Trees in Rotterdam by Julia Voskuill et al- includes 2 letters in envelope attached to front cover, the first from R Shaw to Mr van Hoey Smith at Arboretum Trompenburg, dated 29/05/1985, congratulating him on the book, pointing out a tree growing at Benmore (Pinus peuce, p.71 - is Shaw saying it's uncredited?) and asking the identity of the tree bark on the front cover. The 2nd letter is the reply from van Hoey Smith, dated 05/06/1985, identifying the tree as Taxodium ascendens (p67) and sending Shaw a free copy of the book, presumably this one.
EBGF2: Royal Kew by Ronald King - contains letter from George Taylor to Richard Shaw, 10/12/1985, Taylor sending Shaw signed copy of King's book and embarrassed by King's praise of him.
EOUO1: Sander's Encyclopaedia of Gardening by Hellyer;
EOUP1: Textbook of Botany by Lowson;
EOUQ1: The Encyclopaedia of Plant Portraits by Hellyer;
EOUR1: The Growing Plant by Neilson-Jones; - the above four books were all awarded to Richard Lendrum Shaw by the RHS - Chittenden Award for the highest marks in the Wisley Diploma Examination, 1954
EOUS1: An Introduction to Plant Taxonomy by C. Jeffrey, signed R Shaw, RBG Kew, 1968, and again, 1969; contains a sheet of A5 paper - corrections to the text, possibly by Jeffrey and/or Jim Keesing, and used by Shaw;
EOUT1: Bedgebury Pinetum and Forest Plots by Forestry Commission; attached to front cover is a letter from A. Westall, 04/04/1966, thanking Shaw for showing him round Wakehurst, and sending him this book and enclosing a 'Paramount card' used by Plant Records at Bedgebury, filled in for a fictitious tree - early card catalogue system with punched holes, turned into slots depending on categories, to allow retrieval of certain cards. The cards are still enclosed with the book. Also attached is a small card with letter codes on it.
