Papers of Eileen Richardson

Personal papers created and acquired by Eileen Richardson throughout her nursing and teaching careers. These include:

Brown and grey fabric binder containing a file titled “Nursing Notes from Preliminary Training School, First 3 Months of Course.” The file contains a series of notes from Richardson’s Nursing Training at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, 1955

Green binder titled: “Day Book, October 1964 – April 1966, Eileen W. Richardson.” Contains a diary written during Richardson’s nurse tutor training at the University of Edinburgh. The diary is separated into daily logs and includes information about what she did as part of her training, as well as her impressions and opinions regarding the course. This file also contains colour photographs of Eileen and her classmates on an observation trip to Denmark, Finland and Sweden. These are glued onto several pages of the day book, Oct 1964 – Apr 1966

Eileen Richardson completed her nursing training in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh between 1955 and 1959. Subsequently she qualified as a Midwife in the Perth Royal Infirmary in 1960. After completing a postgraduate teaching degree in 1966, she worked nursing tutor at the University of Edinburgh. Eileen then worked in Nurse Education for many years both as a teacher and education manager. Eileen is a graduate of both the Open and Sussex Universities, obtaining a master’s degree in Education at the latter. From 1993 to 2007, Eileen was a member of staff at the School of Health and Social Care at Bournemouth University where she held a number of leadership posts.

Since 2007 Eileen has held the role of Vice President of the European Transcultural Nursing Association, Secretary of the Phi Mu Chapter for England of Sigma Theta Tau International, and an Associate member of COHEHRE. She also works as a volunteer with the Retired Nurses National Home in Bournemouth and is at present working on the “Memories of Nursing” project with colleagues at Bournemouth University.
