Scope and Content

The two letters are dated 7 and 15 June 1941, and are addressed to Allen Lane at Penguin Books Ltd. They concern the publication by Penguin of an edition of Liddell Hart's The Ghost of Napoleon.

Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Basil Henry Liddell Hart (1895-1970), writer on warfare, was the son of the Rev'd H Bramley Hart and Clare Liddell. He was educated at St Paul's School and Corpus Christi, Cambridge. He served in the First World War, was wounded, and invalided as a captain in 1927. He developed methods of drill, and wrote the official manual in 1920 for training infantry. He published more than thirty books on warfare, strategy and related subjects.

Custodial History

These two letters were found among the Beales papers (EUL MS 49A and EUL MA 49B). It is very doubtful whether they rightly belong in that collection. However, it is not otherwise known how or when they came to Exeter University.
