Papers of John Harry Dring

The collection contains: biographical and personal items; nrewsletters and prayer letters; and correspondence.

John Harry Dring was a missionary in Formosa, Northern Argentina. He was born in Nottingham on 13 May 1911 to a Methodist family and became a committed Christian at a Pentecostal meeting at the age of 19. Dring was strongly influenced by the life of Fenton Hall, a missionary to Brazil. He trained as a missionary at the John D. Drysdale Emmanuel Bible and Missionary Training College in Birkenhead and sailed for Argentina in 1935.

He was based in Formosa, and spent his first years working with the indigenous population in the interior. In 1939, he married Harriet Cubbin (Cubbie), who had been working as a medical missionary in Formosa since 1937. In 1944, the couple left the Emmanuel Mission and started working independently, calling on a support network of friends, family and American Pentecostals. In 1957, they moved back to Formosa, concentrating on working with Spanish speakers and in 1960 opened the largest evngelical church that had been seen in Argentina. Harriet Dring died in 1981, and her husband opened a memorial church to her memory in Belgrano.

Remaining in Argentina (except for a short spell in Paraguay during the Falklands War), he married Ana Tokarzchuk, a church worker in Formosa. Ana died in March 2000, and Harry in November of the same year.

The collection was deposited with the Centre for the Study of World Christianity in three phases. The first material was sent by John Harry Dring in 1994, and two more sets of material were received from Dring's daughter in 1996.
