Scope and Content

Minute Book, 1926-1927 including minutes for International Lodge and Gwaunclawdd Lodge.

Administrative / Biographical History

Abercrave Lodge was a branch of the National Union of Mineworkers (South Wales Area).

The minute book of Abercrave Lodge also contains minutes for both International Lodge and Gwaunclawdd Lodge. The reason for this is not clear since the three lodges are listed separately in coal directories for 1926 and are known to have had different secretaries at the time. However the colliery companies concerned were all at this date members of Welsh Anthracite Collieries Limited, a merger of eight small colliery companies and the collieries are located close together. It is also useful to note that Gwaunclawdd Colliery was in the hands of the Gwaunclawdd Abercrave Colliery Company by 1913 and that International Colliery was absorbed into Abercrave Colliery shortly after nationalisation in 1947.
