Administrative / Biographical History

John William Thomas, mathematician, was born in 1805 in Pentir, Caernarfonshire. He is the author of Elfenau Rhifyddiaeth and Trysorfa yr Athrawon and was a contributor to Seren Gomer and other journals.

He taught at schools in Tregarth, Ffestiniog and Bangor before moving to London in 1834 where he found work at the Greenwich Observatory. He died in 1840 of tuberculosis.
