Scope and Content

There are four letters from Dr Bill Ashworth (b 1920), economic historian at the University of Bristol, three from Peter Fraser, lecturer in history at the University of Manchester, one from the Dean of the School of Social Studies at the University of Sussex, and one from Carl Adolf Bodelsen (1894-1978), writer on English literature. There are also two typescript poems, one signed by P.S. Beales.

Administrative / Biographical History

Beales was the 3rd son of the Rev'd W Beales. He was educated at Kingswood School, Bath, and at the University of Manchester. After his initial post as a Lecturer in Economic History at the University of Sheffield 1919-1926 he moved to London where he lectured in economic history at the LSE, being promoted to Reader in Economic History in 1931. He remained at the LSE until his retirement in 1956. In the 1950s he held several Visiting Professorships at American universities, including Columbia, Harvard and Washington. He received an Hon DLitt from Exeter in 1969.

'Lance' Beales donated these letters to the University Library not long after the occasion of his receiving an Honorary Exeter DLitt, in c1970.
