Scope and Content

A collection of the records of Oxford companies and trade guilds of the mercers, grocers, cordwainers, tailors, butchers, and poulterers, collected by Frederick Joseph Morrell. The collection includes records of:

  • the Company of Cordwainers, including ordinances, royal charters, minutes, and accounts, 1260-1846
  • the Company of Tailors, including election and order books, ordinances and minute books, 1570-1845
  • the Company of Mercers and Grocers, consisting of an account book of the company in Oxford, 1789-1852
  • the Company of Butchers and Poulterers, consisting of the rules and ordinances of the Company in Oxford, 1703, with lists of members and officers, 1707-18, and a few miscellaneous papers and receipts, 1702-3
