Administrative / Biographical History

This private bank was formed in 1775 as Sutton, Leech, Bevan & Reed. The original partners were James Sutton, John Bevan and Richard Read. The business was later known as Hughes, Locke, Oliver & Co. and from 1803 as Locke, Tugwell & Meek; it was also styled the Devizes & Wiltshire Bank. The bank was acquired by Capital & Counties Bank (est. 1877) in 1883.
