Correspondence is primarily to and from the Royal Aeronautical Society, though also includes letters to General Brooke-Popham, the Air Ministry and the Air Inventions Committee.

A. P. Thurston began his career in aeronautics as Chief Aeronautical Assistant to Sir Hiram Maxim. After serving Sir Harim between 1903–10 he founded the UK's first university aeronautical laboratory at Queen Mary College, University of London and remained at Queen Mary's until the outbreak of World War I. After a number of government roles during the war, Thurston became a aeronautical engineering consultant and died in 1964.
