B. Maelor Jones Collection

Records of B. Maelor Jones, 1696-1981, including papers relating to his book, Henry Fielding novelist and magistrate, 1932-1948; papers relating to the Merionethshire Historical and Record Society, 1950-1971; papers relating to Baptist Church and religious affairs, [c. 1851]-1980; papers relating to Merionethshire Rural Community Council, 1947-[1969]; papers relating to Coleg Harlech, 1946-1981; papers relating to Dr Williams' School, Dolgellau, 1968-1976; and miscellaneous papers, 1696-1976.

Benjamin Maelor Jones (1894-1982) was born in Johnstown, Denbighshire, the son of Edward and Jane Jones. He was educated at Ruabon Grammar School and the University of North Wales, Bangor. He later graduated in law from London University and was called to the Bar by Middle Temple in 1929. He taught in Sheffield, Yorkshire, Clitheroe, Lancashire, and Woking, Surrey, until 1936, when he was appointed Headmaster of Bala Boy's School. From 1943, Maelor Jones was Director of Education for Merionethshire, until his retirement in 1960. He supported numerous bodies, notably Merionethshire Historical and Record Society, of which we was the first Honorary Secretary and Chairman from 1962, but also Merioneth Rural Community Council, the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, Coleg Harlech and Dr Williams' School, Dolgellau. Maelor Jones was elected a deacon of Judah Baptist Church, Dolgellau, Merionethshire, in 1947, and in 1953 became the Honorary Treasurer of the Chapel. He was also elected President of the Baptist Union for Denbigh, Flint and Merioneth in the same year. B. Maelor Jones researched a biography of Henry Fielding and wrote Henry Fielding, novelist and magistrate, published in 1933.
