Administrative / Biographical History

Amelia Uden studied at the Reigate and Redhill School of Arts and Craft (1963) and Chelsea School of Art (1965) and undertook a course on woven textiles at the Royal College of Art in 1968. In 1970 she obtained an R.C.A. travel scholarship to study silk-weaving and the Lyon silk industry.
She worked as a weave designer for William Hollins & Co. 'Viyella' in Nottingham 1971-1973 and from 1973 to 1985 had her own workshop.
In 1975 she met Alice Hindson and bought a Luther Hooper comber board draw-loom.
She was external examiner of the BA Hons Woven Textiles course at West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham, 1982-1985, a part-time lecturer (3 days per week) from 1985 to 1992, when her post became full-time. From 1994 to 2004 she was Senior lecturer and subject leader, woven textiles.
She served as a Trustee of the Crafts Study Centre from 1992.
