Administrative / Biographical History
Ogwen Rural District Council (RDC), Caernarfonshire, was created under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894 and comprised the parishes of Aber, Llandygái, Llanllechid and Pentir. The Council comprised councillors and a chairman, elected for three years. RDCs originally took over responsibility for local sanitation from the local sanitary authorities and their responsibilities grew to include sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, maintaining local roads, cemeteries, parks, and licensing of public entertainments, water supply and later housing. RDCs were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Public Health Inspector, Housing Officer, Surveyor and Rating Officer. Ogwen Rural District Council was abolished in 1974 following local government reorganisation, being absorbed into Arfon District Council. Beaumaris Port Health Authority held its meetings in the Council's offices.
