Papers of Edward Hastings

c 100 responses, mainly commendatory, mainly from clergymen, to a circular from Messrs T. and T. Clark, Edinburgh, June 1905, soliciting opinions of the value of James Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible, with the intention of publishing a representative sample. Notes of mistakes are also requested by the Editor, those of importance to be published in The Expository Times.

Publication of the Dictionary ran to several later editions, most recently a revised edition of the Dictionary of the Bible was published in Edinburgh, by Clark, in 1963.

Edward Hastings (1890 -1980 ) was the son of James Hastings (1852 - 1922), minister and theological editor, compiler of the famous Dictionary of the Bible, 5 vols. (Edinburgh, T. and T. Clark, 1898 - 1904) and many other well-known religious works. He was born in Kinneff on 21 Mar 1890, attended school in St Cyrus, Montrose, and graduated MA from Aberdeen University in 1913. After war service, he was appointed minister of the United Free Church at Errol, Perthshire, 1920 - 1923. He became joint editor of The Expository Times, which was founded by his father in 1889, and after his death in 1922, undertook publication of The Speaker's Bible, 36 vols. (Aberdeen, 1923 - 1951).

It is not known for how long these files remained with T. and T. Clark, publishers, Edinburgh, or when they were passed to Edward Hastings. It is presumed that he may have inherited them on the death of his father, in 1922; or that they were passed to him c 1963, when Clark published a further edition of the Dictionary ...
