Edward Griffith MSS

Papers, [1600x1918], many in Edward Griffith's hand or collected by him, including manuscripts of Evan Jones ('Ieuan Gwynedd'), David Richards ('Dafydd Ionawr') and Robert Oliver Rees; material relating to Dolgellau and surrounding districts and to Mary Jones and her journey to Bala; papers of Lewis Williams, Llanfachreth; genealogical material and correspondence relating to Merionethshire Quaker families; and miscellaneous correspondence, poetry, transcripts and notes.

Edward Griffith was born in Barmouth. He established a flourishing draper's business in Dolgellau and became involved to a great degree in the public life of the town. He became a noted local historian, writing a series of articles on the Quakers in Y Geninen and, in 1880, he was made a justice of the peace. He strove to promote education in the area and was a member of the governing body of Dr Williams's school.
