Archie Nye, a memoir

Anthony Harrison's background is not known. Archibald Edward Nye (1895-1967), lieutenant-general, was born on 23 April 1895 at Ship St Barracks, Dublin. He attended the Duke of York's Royal Military School at Dover, and in 1914 enlisted in the ranks to serve in France. He was granted a regular commission in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in 1922, and was given the command of the regiment's second battalion in 1937. Nye was appointed Major-General and Director of Staff Duties at the War Office in 1939, and was Lieutenant-General and Vice-Chief of the Imperial General Staff, 1941-1945. He was Governor of Madras, 1946-1946; the United Kingdom's High Commissioner in Delhi, 1948-1952; and High Commissioner to Canada, 1952-1956. In 1962 he was made chairman of the Nye Committee, formed to deliberate over the reorganisation of the War Office. Nye died on 13 November 1967 in London.
