Scope and Content

Papers from her own and her mother's time at Girton. From her mother's period, the material includes photographs and postcards, 1919-20 which comprise views of College and a group of staff, also a group photograph of Ruth Corder, Elspeth Giles, Joan Bedale, Dorothy Marshall and Rosalie Wetton. There is also an article from 'The Sphere' 11 June 1921, 'Cambridge in 1921'. From her own time at Girton, the material comprises cuttings, programme, photographs etc from a performance at College by the Musical Society of Handel's 'Athaliah' in 1954 (which she produced). In addition there is an illustrated supplement from the 'Daily Telegraph' 26 June 1933, 'English Girls' Schools' with information on and photographs of Cheltenham, North London Collegiate, Roedean and Wycombe Abbey, amongst others.

Administrative / Biographical History

Flora Wallace was educated at Princess Helena College and obtained a MusBac at Edinburgh University (1948-51) before coming to Girton as an affiliated student and Turle Organ Scholar to read Music 1952-54 (MA 1970). She taught music at Crieff, Roedean and Edinburgh until 1984 and is organist and choirmaster at St Ninian's Church, Nairn. She married Charles Wallace in 1956. Her mother, Rosalie MacLeod was also educated at Princess Helena College and then went to the Royal College of Music before coming up to Girton to read Modern Languages 1919-22. However, like her daughter, she was a Turle Music Scholar at Girton. After training at Mrs Hoster's Secretarial College, she became organist for two London churches then had two years as a secretary and 'foreign correspondent' to a company director in New Malden before returning to Mrs Hoster's to teach English, French and German shorthand. She was a translator in the Press Department of the British Army of the Rhine in Wiesbaden 1927-29 and married an army officer, Roderick MacLeod, in 1930.
