Autograph letter, 27th February 1900, to Sir Alfred Milner from Colonel R.G. Kekewich, commander of the garrison during the siege of Kimberley, lamenting and defending his position following criticism and noting Cecil Rhodes's opposition to him.

Administrative / Biographical History

Major-General Robert George Kekewich (1854-1914), CB (1900) entered the Army in 1874. Following involvement in the Ndebele War of 1896, he was made a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Loyal North Lancashires in 1898 and was in charge of the defence of Kimberley, 1899-1900, during the South African War. He was promoted to Major-General in 1902.
