Administrative/Biographical History

The Central Literature Committee for Moslems existed as an informal organisation to help the various mission publishing bodies, circa 1934-1942. Literature and records of the organisation were circulated by Constance E. Padwick a Church Missionary Society missionary, and Miss K. H. Henrey, an evangelistic missionary, acting jointly as Editorial Secretary.

Loose circulars are arranged chronologically, by date stamped or typed on papers [previously in no discernible order].

Open to bona fide research scholars on the production of a letter of introduction from their tutor, or at the discretion of the Librarian of Selly Oak Colleges. Researchers should apply initially to the University Archivist in the Special Collections Department, Main Library.

Unknown deposit to the Selly Oak Colleges Central Library [later forming part of the Orchard Learning Resources Centre]. It is possible that James Windrow Sweetman acquired these records and that they were deposited at the same time as his own papers.

Following the merger of the Selly Oak Colleges and the University of Birmingham in 1999 the custodial ownership of collections belonging to the Selly Oak Colleges and held at the Orchard Learning and Resource Centre (OLRC) was transferred to the University. These collections now form part of the University's Special Collections Department and are available for consultation at the Main Library on the University's Edgbaston Campus.

The University of Birmingham, Special Collections Department holds a rich collection of archives relating to missions, charities and other religious and ecclesiastical organisations and individuals. These include the papers of James Windrow Sweetman, (GB 150 DA42) and the official archives of the Church Mission Society (previously known as the Church Missionary Society for Africa and the East) (GB 150 CMS). There is also a small collection of Constance Padwick papers (GB 150 DA33).
