Weaving industry in Coventry
The ribbon weaving trade in Coventry grew out of the cloth trade. The first recorded mention is the 'Silk Weaver Company' founded in 1627. By 1818 there were 3,008 engine looms and 5,483 hand looms in the city. Mr Josiah Beck started using the new steam powered looms in 1831, causing riots and the burning of the looms. However, within 20 years steam factories were common.
