Administrative / Biographical History

David Alan Price Evans was Professor of Medicine from 1968 until 1983 at the University of Liverpool. He graduated at the University in 1948 with a B.Sc. (First Class Honours in Physiology and Biochemistry) after choosing to major in physiology and studying biochemistry and bacteriology as part of his degree. Professor Price Evans then went on to specialise in pharmacological genetics. He sat further examinations in anatomy, pathology, pharmacology, forensic medicine, public health, gynaecology, surgery and medicine as part of his M.B. Ch.B., which he obtained in 1951. He also gained the degrees of M.R.C.P(London), M.Sc., M.D. and Ph.D (Liverpool).

After qualifying Professor Price Evans worked as a House Physician and House Surgeon at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary before being appointed Holt Fellow in the University Department of Physiology in 1952. He also undertook National Service with the R.A.M.C. and spent 22 months on active service in Japan, Korea, Singapore and Malaya. On returning to Liverpool in 1955 Professor Price Evans worked as Senior House Officer in Medicine at Broadgreen Hospital, before spending two years as Medical Registrar at Stanley Hospital. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1962 whilst assuming the role of Consultant Physician to the Liverpool Royal Infirmary and Broadgreen Hospital. In 1968 he was elected F.R.C.P (London) and was awarded a personal Chair by the Department of Medicine at the University of Liverpool. Following Professor C. Clarke's retirement in 1972, Professor Price Evans was appointed the Chair of Medicine for the University. On his retirement from academia in 1983 he assumed the position of Senior Consultant Physician at the Riyadh Armed Forces Hospital, Saudi Arabia.

Professor Price Evans is well known for his published work, 'Genetic factors in Drug Therapy', which discusses genetic factors in determining responses to drugs. He has also published numerous papers and is internationally recognised for his work on pharmacological genetics. Professor Price Evans has also made significant contributions to the University of Liverpool, endowing the Chair of Medicine which he formerly occupied. In 2008 the University of Liverpool awarded Price Evans an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws for his contributions to medical education and research and his vision as a benefactor.

Arrangement

Material is arranged chronologically by academic year and then subdivided into type of material, e.g. lecture notes, essay questions, practical work. The original order of the papers has been preserved as far as possible.

Acquisition Information

Received from Professor Price Evans 27th September 1988 and additional material on 21st September 1993 and MRCP practice exam papers in 1998 .

Appraisal Information

During processing incomplete written notes and duplicates were removed from the collection. A copy of The Sphinx Commen Issue (July 1949, Volume. 50, No. 2), which was originally part of this collection has been removed and added to the Sphinx sequence within the archive of the University of Liverpool as this issue was not previously held in the reference collection..
