Administrative / Biographical History

Dr Avigdor Schonfeld (1880-1930) was born in Hungary. In 1909 he became rabbi of the North London Beth Hamedrash (the Adath Yisrael Synagogue from 1911). He founded the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations in 1927 and the Jewish Secondary Schools Movement in 1929. The movement aimed to combine in one curriculum the teaching of secular subjects with Hebrew and Jewish instruction.
