Scope and Content

The collection comprises a report entitled 'A Report on the Gardens and Pleasure Grounds of Thoresby Hall'. It was compiled by Dr. Hilary A. Taylor in 1991 and submitted to C.G. Whittaker for 'Classic English Gardens', which has apparently never been published.

The report is divided into the following sections:

Introduction;

Description of the Terraced Gardens and Pleasure Gardens;

Historical Review;

Assessment of Condition of Items Currently on Site;

Design Analyis and Proposals for Action;

Summary of Future Management.

The report contains copies of plans and photographs.

Administrative / Biographical History

Dr Hilary Taylor, of Hilary Taylor Landscape Architects, a Nottingham firm specialising in the conservation of historic gardens and parkland, was also a landscape historian and consultant to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

In 1991 Thoresby Hall, formerly the home of the Earls Manvers, had been sold to a hotel management group.
