It was responsible for student recruitment through marketing and promotion, the welfare of overseas students, facilitating links and exchange agreements with educational institutions around the world and hosting overseas delegations and academic visitors.

In 2003, the International Office was replaced by the International and Graduate Office.

The International and Graduate Office was established in 2003, following a restructuring of the International Office and its relationship with Registry and academic departments. The new office assumed responsibility for international undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment. It also provided support to faculties in marketing and recruitment of UK students and administered postgraduate scholarships. It continued to administer student exchange programmes, provide advice and support services for international students, facilitate links with partner institutions and organise programmes for visiting delegations.
