Scope and Content

Caernarfonshire War Agricultural Committee maps and plans, 1900-[c.1944], mostly relating to boundaries of property, owners, tenants and military use; plans for the crops and grazing and fertilising of farms in the parish of Tudweiliog, [c. 1944].

Administrative / Biographical History

The Caernarfonshire War Agricultural Executive Committee was formed in early 1917 partially from the county's Agricultural Sub-Committee and partially by nominees from the Board of Agriculture. The first task of the Committee was to increase the acreages of potatoes and corn in the county. By 1919, the emphasis had shifted to retraining disabled soldiers. By the following year, the body had been turned into a county agricultural committee, with responsibility for smallholdings, diseases of animals and the agricultural training service. During the First and Second World Wars the Committee used Ordnance Survey maps to determine the boundaries of fields and identify the owners, tenants and types of farming undertaken.
