In 1892 the newly formed county borough of West Ham established the West Ham Technical Institute. In the 1930s Essex County Council was required to improve its technical education following the creation of the new London County Council estate of Beacontree subsequently the South East Essex Technical College was founded in Barking in 1936 and in 1938 the South West Essex Technical College was founded in Walthamstow. In 1970 the West Ham Technical Institute, the South East Essex College of Technology and the South West Essex Technical College and School of Art, were fused to create the North East London Polytechnic (later the Polytechnic of East London). Custodial History

Before its move to the Docklands Campus, the uncatalogued and unsorted institutional archive was housed in UEL's Barking Campus and an external store. When the Barking Campus closed in 2006, the material which was held onsite was transferred, however the external store material was not and as a consequence is lost. The extant material is therefore of a very patchy nature, particularly as there has never been a policy to actively collect records relating to the University. The majority of the collection derives from material which has been sent to the library over the years.

Related Material

UEL archive also holds some records of the North East London Polytechnic, later Polytechnic of East London, 1970-1992.
