Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Slamannan Railway , Falkirk, Scotland, was created by the Slamannan Railway Act of 1835 and the line opened for business in 1835 . The line ran from Arbuckle, near Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, to Slamannan, Falkirk, in the Monklands district between Edinburgh and Glasgow. The line was extended to Causewayend, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, on the Union Canal. It was later extended to Bo'ness and Kinneil in the Falkirk district, and Bathgate, East Lothian, Scotland.
The line had a general working agreement with the Monkland & Kirkintilloch Railway, North Lanarkshire, and the Ballochney Railway Co , North Lanarkshire, where they each used the others rolling stock. The three companies amalgamated in August 1848 to form the Monklands Railway . This company was purchased in 1862 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway Co which in turn was taken over by the North British Railway Co in 1865 .
