Scope and Content

Manuscripts, [13 cent.]-[1922], from the library of Francis William Bourdillon, containing a wealth of romance literature, in particular manuscript and printed editions of the Roman de la Rose. The collection contains original manuscripts, transcripts, translations and notes and includes romances, poetry, 'chansons de geste', biographies, chronicles, medieval manuscripts, commonplace books, public records, songs, hymns, sermons, prayers, inscriptions, terriers, and recipes.

Administrative / Biographical History

Francis William Bourdillon (1852-1921) of Buddington, Midhurst, Surrey, made a special study of medieval French romances, particularly 'Le Roman de la Rose'. For this purpose he had brought together an extensive collection of manuscripts and early printed editions of certain French romances and of books of reference relating to various aspects of this study.
