Scope and Content

Comprises: Bonds issued by the Chinese Government and other bodies, including Canton-Kowloon Railway; Shanghai-Nanking Railway; Province of Petchili; Shanghai Municipal Council. Most in Pounds Sterling denominations, but also including US Dollars, Belgian Francs and Dutch Guilders. Many items have unredeemed interest coupons attached.

Administrative / Biographical History

From the 1860s the Imperial Chinese Government issued bonds as a means of generating overseas capital to fund railways and other industrial development. The practice was continued by the Chinese Republic after 1911. Provincial authorities also issued bonds to finance public works.
