Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Rhagad estate, Corwen, was sold by John Maurice Jones to Judge John Lloyd (1746-1806) in 1804 for £10,000. The Lloyds were a Denbighshire family of lawyers and owned the Berth estate in Llanbedr and Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd. Rhagad had previously been in the possession of the Lloyd family until Margaret, sole heiress of the estate, sold it to John Maurice Jones of Cefn Coch. John Lloyd's heir, Edward Lloyd (1788-1859) of Berth and Rhagad, married Frances Madocks of Vron Iw. Their son, John Lloyd (1811-1865), succeeded his father and died without issue. John's heir was his nephew, Edward Owen Vaughan Lloyd (1857-1914). He also died without issue and his sister, Sophy (1862-1953), succeeded him. She married Captain John Rose in 1883. They changed their name to Lloyd in 1915, Sophy being known as Mrs Sophy Rose-Lloyd. After Captain Rose's death she married Colonel F.P. Lousada in 1928, and was known as Mrs Lousada-Lloyd. Berth was sold in 1930. Her only son, Ronald Rose Lloyd was killed in the Great War and the last heir of Rhagad was Sophy's daughter, Mrs Renee Alexander. According to the 1873 return of owners of land Gertrude Jane Mary Lloyd of Rhagad owned an estimated 4,414 acres, all in Denbighshire and Merionethshire, with an estimated rental of £3,578.
